My role in teaching medieval literature is to be an improvisational guide, leading students on a journey from unfamiliarity to understanding. In my teaching, I emphasize the commonalities in human emotions and experiences across considerable temporal distances. It is immensely valuable to become familiar with a culture that, on the surface, seems so different from our own. This experience prepares students for encounters with the unfamiliar in any cross-cultural context, and grounds their experiences in a more multifaceted understanding of human life.
